5 Great Portrait Photography Locations in Downtown Denver, Colorado

Denver, Colorado is known for being the Mile High City and home to great mountain views. When you’re not looking for majestic landscapes for the background of your photos, Downtown Denver has amazing portrait photography locations.

Boulder and Colorado Springs may get you closer to the mountain ranges, but I’m a firm believer in the urban aesthetic that Downtown Denver delivers. 5 great portrait photography locations near downtown Denver are:

  1. Meadow at City Park

  2. Civic Center Park

  3. 16th Street Mall

  4. RiNO

  5. Commons Park

1) Meadow at City Park

Denver City Park is centrally located in Denver proper. It’s not the largest park in the city, but it is still one of the most beautiful. Meadow at City Park is located behind the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

This location is great for portraits because of the variations of backdrops in such a confined area. There are tons of trees for greenery and colors. There are a few bodies of water that provide a beautiful water element. At the right angle there is also an amazing view of the Downtown Denver skyline.

2) Civic Center Park

If you’re looking for a location with a bit more character, consider Civic Center Park located near the Colorado State Capitol. This park is located on the edge of Downtown Denver and features a Greek Amphitheater, a garden, and large columns and statues. No matter which way you turn, there’s something great for a model or client to interact with.

3) 16th Street Mall

16th Street Mall remains one of Downtown Denver’s premier attractions for many reasons. The 1.25 mile long mall spans the length of Denver’s Downtown area and provides access to great stops within downtown including Union Station.

From the Denver Pavillions to Larimer Square, 16th street mall provides interesting backdrops of urban scenery to create amazing portrait photography. A few of the alley ways and side streets provide a slice of seclusion and even some street art. If you’re looking to get a grungier vibe, 16th street may be the way to go.

4) RiNo

Denver’s River North Art District has been aptly named RiNo and is home to amazing contemporary art galleries, concert venues, and street art. This area is rather industrial, but the art on the buildings is unique and colorful.

This area lends itself to photo shoots that are fun and whimsical or those that enjoy an industrial urban feel. Large warehouse spaces and railroad tracks are featured throughout the area to provide visually interesting background elements.

5) Commons Park

If you’re exploring Downtown Denver and continue past Union Station, you’ll find Commons Park. Commons park sits against the South Platte River and has an amazing view of Denver’s LoDo and Highland neighborhoods. This park has great trails and topography as well as access to the river and bridges to create interesting elements in your portraits.

This park provides a variety of options for background elements including great cityscape views. There is a large open area for clean-looking portraits as well. A short walk will put you on an interesting bridge or land you near the Downtown Denver Skatepark. Either way, you’ll have a ton of fun taking portraits here.
