3 Professional Looks for Black Men with Locs

As a black man with locs, it’s important to understand the different ways to style your hair when taking professional photos. You may not always want to run to the barber shop or beauty salon to get your hair retwisted. Below are three of my go-to looks when taking professional photos of black men with locs.

Keep in mind, the suggested looks below are for mid length locs. Most of these looks will work for folks with longer locs, but those with shorter locs will need to be a little more creative.

Pulled Back | 3 Quarter Turn

If your locs are long enough, this look is a certified classic. It shows off the fact that your hair is long and it’s super simple to pull off.

The power of the three quarter turn is in the eyes. Don’t force a look back at the camera as it may feel uncomfortable. Instead turn the eyes toward the direction of the turn for a more relaxed and natural look.

Pulled Back | Straight on | Dressed Up

If you’re looking to hide the length of your hair, a straight on pose is definitely what you’re looking for. To add a bit of style or flare, throw on a blazer or suit coat to dress things up a bit.

This look is more about power and professionalism. I don’t believe or support hiding one’s hair, however, I do believe in looking a certain way to land a certain position. If you need to give off an illusion for a photo, this may be the way to go.

Let it Hang | Casual King

Business casual is when you can let a few things slide. This look is recommended if you want your locs to shine and you are embracing whatever your hair has decided to do.

This is my favorite. Locs love to exist in a natural state and there is no state more natural that loose and hanging out. They may need to be tamed a bit (depending on your taste), but letting your locs hang is always a good idea.

As a black man with locs and also being a photographer, I have documented my personal loc journey through photos. If you’d like a post similar to this with shorter locs, let me know and I will definitely provide that information.
