The Best Camera of [Insert Year Here]
“The best camera is the one you have with you”, Chase Jarvis
I believe Mr. Jarvis almost hit the nail on the head. While it is true that having a camera is better than not having a camera, the best camera isn’t always the one that you have with you.
I can think of several occasions where I wished that I had brought a different camera with me.
You Can Take a Good Photo With almost Any Camera
I believe “The best camera is the one that works for you.”, Larry G.
In all seriousness, I’ve seen great photos taken with a smartphone, micro 4/3 cameras, crop sensor cameras, old DSLR cameras, medium format cameras, polaroid cameras, mirrorless cameras, drone, and everything in between.
Choosing the Best Camera for You
When it comes to documenting your life through photos, it’s really not about having the newest, flashiest camera. It’s not about the widest sharpest lens with the smallest aperture.
When choosing a camera to help document your life, it should feel like an extension of you. It should not be intimidating or scary to pick up. It should be durable and you shouldn’t be afraid to take it with you.
These are the things that make any camera you choose the best camera. If you are a perfectionist and want top notch quality, that’s fine. Go and spend the money on the latest and greatest you can find, but unless you know how to use it, it’s just a pretty and expensive paper weight.
Which Camera Should You Choose?
If you just want to get better at taking photos of your cat or your kids, your phone is good enough.
If you went out and bought a little point and shoot, that’s great as well.
If you have a camera with interchangeable lenses (DSLR or mirrorless) that’s ok.
Looking to take those grand wide landscapes from above? Drones are great for that.
The point is to choose a camera that makes sense for you and your style. Different cameras are good at different things and feel good to different people. Find one that works for you and start shooting.
No matter which camera you’re starting with, the principles are the same and we’ll go over them in the coming weeks.
Which Cameras Do I Have?
Please keep in mind that my camera collection was built up over years of trial and error. The list of cameras below are cameras I use on a regular basis. These links are affiliate links and I will earn a (very) small kickback if you use them to purchase your gear.
