When to Schedule a Mother’s Day Photo Session

Picture this. It’s Mother’s Day morning. After eating breakfast or brunch, you give your mom a small wrapped package. She opens the package and reveals a framed photo of herself and you, her child or children. Her eyes well with tears as she leans over and thanks you for such a meaningful gift and memory.

Allow me to paint a different picture. It’s your child’s 18th birthday. On this day, they have become an adult. You take them out to dinner to celebrate. At this dinner, you hand them a wrapped book. As they unwrap the book, their mouth opens and you notice a look of joy on their face. The book is filled with old photos of them as they have grown up. They acknowledge how much this book means to them and give you the biggest, warmest hug of your life.

Mother’s day will be here before you know it. The pandemic has definitely limited interactions between Mothers and their children. As things begin to go back to normal, nothing says Happy Mother’s Day like the gift of photography and documented memories.

So now that you’re thinking about photos for Mother’s Day, you may be wondering when should I schedule this photo shoot? There are a few different answers depending on how you want to present the gift.

If The Photo Session is the Gift

Some people would like the photo session to be the gift. If this is the case, I would schedule your session to take place no later than the week before Mother’s Day. Photographers have Mothers, Mother figures, or are Mothers themselves and may take that day off.

This is also the time frame I would suggest if you are the Mother wanting to document this time of your child’s life (Mommy and me sessions).

If You Want to Gift a Print

If you’re looking to present a print to your mom on Mother’s Day, I would suggest booking your session at least one month out, so early to mid April. This time frame will allow your photographer time to take the photos, edit the photos, order prints, and have them be delivered well before Mother’s Day.
