Just Put It Out

Just put it out. And don’t look back.

If you follow my music at all (P.L.G. wherever music is digitally sold, shameless plug) then you should have been expecting this post. Earlier in the year I said that I wanted to release 2 EPs by the end of the year and trust me I’m well on my way to accomplishing this goal. However, I think that the motive behind the goal was to just push myself to create and release more music. The more I learn about the changing state of the industry, the more I’m starting to see that the surface level goal may need to change. Allow me to elaborate.

There’s no doubt that the industry still respects the project release, however with streams becoming the main way that listeners consume music, it makes sense to release a ton of singles either along the way to completing a project or for the sole purpose of combining them in the end. Releasing a lot of singles allows listeners to connect with or reject individual songs. I know from personal experience that sometimes it’s difficult to connect with every song on a project, but when that single comes out, I’ll connect or reject and either play it on repeat or never listen to it again. Although it’s hit or miss, it’s a great way to test what works and what doesn’t.

My surface level goal was to release 2 EPs by the end of the year. What my goal should have been was to release at least 10 songs this year. I’ve moved away from my previous model that required me to create all the instrumentals, produce, write, record, etc to a model where I focus on writing to an instrumental that I have leased from a producer. Within this new model, I saw the potential to scale the amount of music I was making and it works for me (for now).

Using this model I can now put out music at scale and instead of focusing on putting projects together, I’m going to focus on putting out the music. I’m going to just put it out and not look back. I think it will be easier to do this on an individual track level rather than a project level. I can make a song in an hour but it takes months to put together a project. This new industry is going for scale and if I’m going to win, I have to play the game.
